Paula Varela

Professor Paula Varela is Food Engineer from Universidad de la República (Uruguay) and has a PhD from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Spain). She has wide experience in academic and industrial research, in different positions in Uruguay, Spain, UK and currently Norway. She is Senior Researcher in Sensory and Consumer Sciences at Nofima and Professor in Sensory and Consumer Sciences at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. She has authored more than 100 articles in international journals, various book chapters and numerous presentations in scientific meetings; she has co-authored and co-edited four books on methodological aspects of consumer research. Her research has focused on the exploration of new methodologies for understanding consumer perception.
Paula is currently interested in methodological aspects of research with special populations (children, elderly, food sub-cultures) at the light of societal issues related to food behaviour, as well as consumer involvement in the green shift.
Prof. Varela leads the EU project Edulia, a multidisciplinary Marie S. Curie training network, looking into bringing down barriers to children healthy eating, and which will train a new generation of researchers in high-level skills across complementary fields through studying children’s food choices.
